The popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly hospitalised in Republic of Benin after being diagnosed of possible kidney or lungs illness.
Platforms Africa reports that one of Igboho’s lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, who disclosed this in an interview with BBC Yoruba, alleged that his client developed the illness in the Republic of Benin prison custody.

He added that the Yoruba secessionist leader who has been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment, needed urgent medical attention.

“Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to rush him to the hospital.
“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.
“Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs,” the lawyer stated in the interview monitored by Platforms Africa.
The latest development was also confirmed by sources in the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua.
“Yes, he is ill and his kidney appears affected. We are not very sure yet. Another test result is expected for confirmation. We are working on that and I can assure you that he is in safe hands,” one of the sources said.
When contacted, the spokesperson for Ilana Oodua, Maxwell Adeleye, added, “Expect our reaction soon. But the government should be warned that nothing must happen to Igboho.”
Igboho, who is currently in a detention facility in the Benin Republic, was arrested alongside his wife on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.
Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was later released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.
On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
This came after the Court in Benin ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.
The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Benin Republic, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence, and causing disunity in Nigeria.
